The ink from my waiver is still wet when the padlock clicks, securing us in a ten-by-ten-foot chain link cage inside the animal’s sanctuary. The smell of plants, bugs and decay mix with the humid air. I inhale the earthy odor in deep breaths. Huge leafy palms and stubby bushes paint irregular shadow shapes on the jungle floor. We rattle a bucket of chicken feet, inviting B’alam to come.
He shows himself about fifty feet away. His spots blend into the background, but his eyes glow gold. I blink, and now B’alam scratches his haunches against the outside of our cage wall. Stretching my fingers through the small gaps in the fence, I pet the beast. On the surface his fur is coarse, but my fingers sink into the soft, thick fur underneath. Individual strands of brown and orange hairs stack upon each other creating the distinctive rosette pattern. He catches a tossed chicken’s foot, and we hear the crunch of bones.
With a vertical leap, he lands, light as feather, on top of the cage. When he opens his mouth for another treat, four-inch canines protrude through the gaps into our space, and the pad of his paw is bigger than my face. Following the trainer’s suggestion, I stretch on my tippy toes, pushing my forehead up, near his open mouth. His sandpaper tongue unfurls down the side of my face, tasting the sweat, excitement and awe. Tasting me.

I love how there is no fear expressed, just sweat, excitement and awe. So little I, and so much, he. How you begin with a waiver and end with a kiss, from fifty feet to licking your face. How you infuse all the senses, beginning with a click, earthy smells, Four inch canines, fingers sink into the soft thick fur, tasting me. You aroused all my senses and an enviable amount of wow.
So you were the one in the cage. The captivated but not quite the captor.

Catches your attention right away. Left me wanting more.
Excellent! Your wording felt so intentional and specifically descriptive that it really allowed me to share in this experience with you. Thank you!
Brava! Unique experience, The details suggest a fearful and awe inspiring experience without needing to say it. My favorite lines are the last two sentences. Perfect! If you published a book of essays about your unique experiences, I would buy it. (I’m not a publisher, just a fellow writer.)
Thrilling experience beautifully captured! Well done, Casey!
