By Grady Johnson
Grandad was trying to button his shirt. His vision had mostly gone and his hands shook now. Still, he pressed at the fabric. He’d skipped a hole somewhere and was stuck halfway up.
My dad watched quietly. Not irritated yet, but his jaw was tight. He could help if Grandad would let him.
I loved them both and knew better than to say anything. I sat between them, staring at the swirls on the rug. Years of embers from the fireplace left dimples in the pattern that reminded me of Starry Night.
“Just let me do it,” Dad finally said.
Grandad pretended not to hear. Just kept fumbling, slower now. Dad stared at the buttoning. I wondered if it would be like this with me and Dad someday. The silence between them felt genetic.
It was time to go. Dad got his things and waited for me to hug Grandad.
In the end, the shirt stayed crooked.

The silence between them felt genetic–so fabulous–raises so many questions about what else can be genetic
