Mike carries snacks. And water. Are you cold? He’s got an extra scarf. He has tissues. He has mosquito wipes for summer months and hand warmers for winter. He carries hand sanitizer that smells like lavender. I tragically underpack for outings. Yes, I knew we were going on a ten-mile hike, and no, I did not remember to bring anything to eat. But Mike did. He brought extra protein bars for him and extra fruit leather for me. He brought the cherry-flavored electrolytes because I prefer them to the lime ones. He carries the heavier bag with the Camelbak so that I don’t have to carry water. He even carries my things for me—like when he hefted my worldly possessions up and down the mountains of the Dolomites, adding to his own burden to lighten mine.
He carries our dog’s harness, his leash, and an extra-long leash just in case. He carries a frisbee AND a stick. He carries dog treats. And our dog’s water bottle. And sometimes our dog.
Would it surprise you to learn his spirit animal is a snail? A creature that carries his home along with him on his slow, deliberate route? Mike carries our world, his care taking the form of pretzels, or sunscreen, or a rain jacket. If ever I feel insecure in his love for me, all I need to do is open my palms, and heart, to what I hadn’t even thought to need before he handed it to me.

Love this-A story about a man who wears a shell on his back.
Wonderful. Thank you.
Katie, I loved reading this beautiful piece. Mike is a lovely human being, and you make his thoughtfulness and planning and love come alive.
Just lovely. Thank you!
Mike, definitely one of a kind-an astonishing, caring man.
A beautiful little portrait of what love can look like.
There are degrees of love in a relationship. If you were a thermometer, your love for this man would be 120 degrees. How fortunate you are and how beautifully you express it here.
I also carry all the good stuff!
I loved this piece. Thank you for writing it. I think these practical caring forms of love are often underrated.
This is love. Thank you for writing this.
