Every morning, a father dove lands on the railing of the deck outside our living room window. He waits for the mother dove, who’s been sitting vigil on their nest all night, to notice him. Then she flies off and he takes her place atop the two small eggs, incubating in our hanging fern, until evening.
My daughters and I love witnessing this twice a day ritual, grateful that they chose the deck on our humble second story duplex to start their family. For a few months we’ve lived in this new nest with the buttery morning light and tiny bathroom. The girls are adjusting to having two homes and me, to coparenting with someone I vowed to love forever but can no longer live with.
After the eggs hatch, we sneak glimpses of the dove parents feeding the babies, their fuzzy heads just visible in the hanging basket.
It is said that mourning doves mate for life, but like most birds, their commitment to their young lasts only a few weeks.
One afternoon, as the girls are about to leave with their dad, we see the downy fledglings perched on the deck railing. “They’re going to try to fly!” he exclaims. “But how do they know how?” our youngest asks. “They don’t yet; they’re going to learn how to do it by doing it.”
Our eyes catch, and he continues, “It’s an act of faith—right, Mama?”
I nod, and together the four of us look to the doves.

What a beautiful story about parallel new beginnings. It is particularly helpful to me, since I lost my mate for life about six months ago. She became a butterfly, and I remain a caterpillar. I am watching for signs of her love, thinking about when I will join her in flight.
Lovely
Absolutely beautiful. I loved the interweaving of faith and courage. Thank you.
Simply, profoundly, beautiful. Thank you.
This story evokes such hope and acceptance amidst life’s transitions. You’ve woven in so elegantly the themes of love and parenting and the precariousness of nests. Thank you for writing and sharing this.
Such a touching metaphor. Beautifully written. Thank you so much!
Exquisite
Really gorgeous work – I love that this story feels so delicate but carries, carefully, so much weight. Thank you for sharing!
Beautiful.
